The Christmas season is a wonderful time for celebration, connection, and a well-earned break—but it can also be surprisingly tough on the body. Whether you’re wrapping gifts, travelling long distances, or spending extra hours in the kitchen or yard; those festive activities can lead to stiff necks, sore backs, or tired legs.

The good news? A few simple physiotherapy-inspired habits can help keep you moving comfortably all season long.
First, remember to break up prolonged sitting, especially during long drives or the Boxing Day test match. Standing or stretching frequently (30-40 minutes) helps reduce muscle tension and supports healthy circulation.
If you’re lifting heavy items—think eskies, boxes of decorations, or that extra-large ham—focus on good lifting mechanics: bend at the knees, keep items close to your body, and avoid twisting while carrying.
The festive period is also a perfect time to recommit to gentle movement. A short walk after Christmas lunch aids digestion, boosts energy (staves off the food coma), and helps counteract the effects of indulgent meals. If you’re feeling stiff, try a few simple mobility exercises for your back, hips, and shoulders. Especially if backyard cricket is on after lunch!
Finally, remember that rest matters too. Prioritise hydration, good sleep routines, and moments of calm; your body recovers best when you look after it.
This Christmas, give yourself the gift of a healthier, happier body. If aches or pains start to creep in, a physiotherapy check-in can help keep you moving into the new year with confidence.
